Community
The Lodge was developed on the site of a former
farm, and although construction of our lodge only
commenced recently, we have patrolled the river
since 2002, with staff recruited from the local
villages to discourage dynamite fishing. We have
specifically worked with the local community and
village hierarchy to provide employment for the
inhabitants of the area and they now form the backbone
of the team at Vanghat. A percentage of the rod
license is donated to the village fund. Through
community involvement with this project, we have
eliminated both poaching and bombing from our section
of the river, which had led to a drastic improvement
of the fish stock. The wildlife diversity has expanded
significantly as a direct consequence of this approach,
and now includes otters and turtles, which have
not been seen for many years.
